PROPER INTRODUCTIONS

"NOBLE BY BIRTH"

So in the recent AAR, you got a first tentative glimpse of the new blue skinned Traventi noble model. But now (trumpet fanfare: Tra-Laa-Laaaa) for a proper introduction. As mentioned in the last post she is on a state of the art hover chair; while her pet sabretooth cat rests half on her lap.. purring away hungrily! On the back of the chair we have some sculpted detail, including the same cool skull symbol you see on the favour tokens.

Next we have the cast and painted version of the Avian race, and with all the arana beasts having been released by the Nisari, this hunter creature could be very busy for quite some time.

Details of the Avians will be revealed in much more detail within the pages of the skirmish game, once these have been released and made available at Salute.

" NISARI "

Speaking of the Nisari, I have completed the first model based on Jez's design. This one here is the female version: but with tight bandages.. the breast area is quite subdued.

Next up is a Nisari priestess. I was so inspired by Jez's concept that I thought it would be really cool to make the priestess who runs the coven. She has a Dust Vyper in each hand for extracting the venom to administer to her followers.

" CREMINISCI "

I have also been working my way through these fishy aliens. As T had done three great sketches, I decided to make 3 genders, a male, a female, and a Null.

Pictured below is the female and the Null. As I'm still sculpting the male for both competition winners.

Until next time Have Fun

Cheers Dave

  3. Very cool, Dave. Whilst we may have seen some of these 'in the green', it's reaaly goid to see them painted up. Obviously, the Nisari are my favourites (can't think why...lol) and the Dust Vipers, with their triple-split heads, are cooler than I had envisaged. Yay!

  4. Ooops, I`m slow replying this week, busy busy here as November gives way to December and an eye on the calendar reveals only 21 days until the main event itself (scary scary). So much to do and.... frankly, "heeeeellp" getting it all done in time for guests arriving, presents purchased and wrapped (or waiting for them to arrive if purchased on line), house to decorate (bedding and room prep for all six bedrooms to get ready for the guests) , food to plan, wine and beer to make (for guests), and that`s before even getting to all the other commitments LOL. Aaaaaaah you gotta love Christmas - actually, we do. No "Bah Humbug" in THIS house. Its happy happy marry making all the way.

    Aaaaaanyway hehe..

I still like the Traventi noble woman best, I think shes simply smashing, and I have ideas for her in my games careening through my mind in abundance. Shes nicely sculpted and I really like the colours and tones you have used to paint her.

Okay, they`re all nice. And I am looking forward to developing the Nisari... especially the priestess sect, with their crimson red eyes and macabre blood soaked rituals.

While the Creminisci, they intrigue me, and I am looking forward to getting my hands on those, as I have a great idea going on in my head how I want to paint mine up. All involving pastel green and deeper hue algae, coral blues and subtle pinks, with the slightest dash of translucence and watery sheen.

Nice post Dave, and in keeping with my focused work load this week, as I paint and prepare for the next skirmish game adventure, which should be quite a biggie I think.

    12. oh gosh, I can see it now. In centuries to come Tony Robinson the XIIth will uncover this ancient tomb with.. no, not a terracotta army, but a resin one. Was it some strange human like alien, or just a important king of old? Generations of visitors in the British Museum will ogle and take photos (there will be postcards too of course) of these intricately crafted little people. Servants, perhaps, to serve this important elder in the happy sculpting land of beyond.

And from up in a cloud game heaven, in there will by Mr Dave, chuckling away merrily to himself going "If they only knew"

    14. As the Egyptians placed Ushabtis in their tombs, there is a precedent for having sculpted figures in with you. Imagine H G Wells breaking into a tomb, seeing all the figures lined up and turning to his companion and saying "Got any dice?"...lol

      Delete
    15. Ooo shabti what a cool idea. I think T would like that one. But imagine they had animated souls embedded in them. If a tomb they are in is disturbed, they might scuttle about like very mischievous imps, delivering cruel (prolonged) mayhem upon those foolhardy enough to enter.

As for Wells, I would imagine he got burried with his dice clenched firmly in his fist. But then again, maybe those pesky Ushabtis prised them from his grasp and ran off with them hehe.

  5. When I see the Nisari I see a dark, macabre nature twisted version of Frank Herbert`s Fremen, from his classic Dune sage: especially as portrayed in the 2 series HBO version made for TV and DVD. The Avian looks interesting and I find myself thinking of "Enemy Mine" (Dennis Quaid) for some reason hehehe. I look forward to seeing these in the flesh and in all their feathery-ness. The three sex Creminisci remind me of an idea covered many times in Star Trek over the years, of a symbiotic species requiring a complex three tier mating ritual process for procreation; most interesting, especially the (what I assume are totally silent for some reason) Null alien.

The noble.. well shes essential kit isn`t she :)

  9. Quite hard to copyright a standard word Luke sweetie. Games Workshop used to try that trick a lot I believe. Null is in fact a standard dictionary word (actually, often applied in computer terminology). The word signifies neutral behavior. Null means, nil or None. Used to suggest a person.. it would mean someone who is undefined, empty, or who has meaningless value.

    Hope that helps.

    1. No we are not working with either of those companies Luke, and as T very rightly points out you can not copyrite a word in the english language, and they are not the first company to use the word either, it has been used in sci-fi and fantasy many time over the years.
Thank you for the heads up, always useful, and if need be can always come up with a new name that I will copyrite, like with Scabendi, Exuvium and Ceratid

  11. What we like best about the new WTW DM/Skirmish range is that.. unusual for the hobby (a bit like it being unusual to show women miniatures clad in anything other that men`s fantasy ideals of slinky garments and sensual ornamentation) is that less than half of Dave`s figures are portrayed with weapons in their hands.

In play testing the new rules, I have now watched dozens of games and played between over twenty different people; and one overriding observation has come out every time I`ve watched: the rules are more about non combat (bribery, persuasion, seduction, betrayal, quick talking, computer hacking and file extraction, bullying, love and courage - and so on) much more than being about combat. Where combat does takes place, its often fast and furious and as likely to be a quick sneaky stab in the back along a darkened corridor, than a head on weapon to weapon fight. It all makes running your adventures feel more like watching an episode of I Claudius, or Riddick, than it does endless hack and slash. and THATS why I am so impressed by this new range of models, which makes playing more mature games of this nature so much more aesthetically enjoyable. Nothing worse than two model guys meant to be having a chat, and one is pointing a pistol at the other one`s head, while the other in retort is swinging an axe at his companion`s sternum.

    3. I`m sure many hate me Dave hehe. I don`t like painting things in colours that are lies. I don`t know how to flatter, and I dont know how to play favouritism games. In other words, I dont jump through hoops or do team play very well, effectively shooting myself in the foot at every twist and turn LOL. See, I`m my own worst enemy *grins*

Hmmmm, yes I see that. I mean, your humans are the space scum of the galaxy, your heroes and heroines are Moreton Bay Bugs, Space Prawns (Exuviums), Zen Rhinos (Ceratids.. and Horned Hominid are so cool) and Scaley Skinned Lizard Aliens (Scabendi). Not exactly running with the main pack Dave *winks*

    5. Yet you fit in perfectly in cupboard ! We are all individuals at the end of the day, which is what can make for interesting conversations, and really like being on here where people arn't afraid to speak their mind which can lead to a better product at the end of the day taking on board all the feedback we get

    6. Unfortunately if you look at human history, we see something we want we go and take it by force ! You can imagine alien species passing us by going " OH don't go there they've got humans ! " like we are considered as some sort of virus, as we never look at the long term effects we have on society or our eco system, it's very sad really !

  12. {{we never look at the long term effects we have on society or our eco system, it's very sad really}}

Horrifyingly and frighteningly so, I fear.

This is e-x-a-c-t-l-y how Stevie feels about the world (very much in line with Sarah`s thoughts on this too). I used to like everyone and trust everyone, and over time I grew to realise he had the right of it, and now I`m as hermit like, world weary and jaded, and as cautious as he is haha. Thats another thing he taught me: that we may not be able to change the world, but by immersion into this hobby, we can at least `play act` like we can make a difference. I think that`s why I love role play so much. When I play "Ravenloft" its good versus evil, and `winning` makes you feel good inside, defeating the bad guys and freeing the defenceless. Your game may show humans as the ultimate evil parasite of the galaxy, but the way Stevie and myself play it, we have our human heroes TRY against the odds to redeem themselves in the name of the human race.

Oh I do so love make belief :)
